“Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. EMDR is a set of standardized protocols that incorporates elements from many different treatment approaches” (www.emdria.org).
When an individual experiences a traumatic event, the traumatic material often gets “stuck.” This leaves the individual in a state of hyperarousal (fight/flight) or dissociation (freeze/fold). In addition, trauma alters the way an individual views self and others. Through the use of dual attention stimulation, also known as bilateral stimulation or BLS, EMDR engages the cognitive (thinking) and somatic (body) experiences of the client and facilitates the processing of traumatic information to help the individual become unstuck. All clinicians at Amarillo Professional Counseling and Consultation are trained in EMDR. Elizabeth Clark and Kiona Ester are both certified EMDR clinicians. Certification means they have received advanced training and consultation to be prepared to treat complex cases.
